Weekly recap + what we ate: Back to school 2024!

Well we’re off to the races with the 2024-2025 school year. And a new month. Whew. It was a pretty uneventful first week. The kids went to school. They came home. Extracurricular activities haven’t yet started, and I’m not yet working on a show, so it does feel like we are easing into the new school year.

Right out of the gate, though, the 7th grader’s middle school had their Back to School Night on Thursday. It felt a little soon to have a Back To School Night the fourth day of school, but oh well. I was glad of a chance to go – aside from the school plays and some early pick ups in the office, I haven’t really seen her middle school yet; last year it seemed as if every school event was on an evening when I had to work. At Back to School Night, the majority of the evening had the parents/guardians going to their student’s classes in order, with six minutes in each class and four minutes to get from one period to the other. Each student has seven classes a day, plus advisory and homeroom- down hallways, up stairs, from one end of school to another. I don’t know how the 12 year old manages this every day. I was exhausted by the end of the evening, but it was nice to put faces to the teachers and get a sense of what school is like for her. Last year I found middle school to be a huge black hole – the kid went to school. There were weekly newsletters that came home – all good things though. Once in a while a message from the Principal about an incident, or a form for me to sign. A few times a year, I saw grades. I suppose middle school is just one more step to independence and not knowing what my kid is up to.

My mother and my aunt were still in town most of last week. They had gone to New York City, but came back mid week. We did some less obvious touristy things. One day we went downtown to the Kennedy Center. We didn’t see a show or anything, but it’s just a beautiful building to walk around, and we had lunch at the Cafe on the roof, where there is a wonderful view of DC. There is an exhibit on JFK and his role in the arts. On that day, since we were already in the city, we went to the Portrait Gallery. I mainly picked the Portrait Gallery because it’s an easy metro ride and also I love sitting in its courtyard. There was an exhibit on Hollywood portraits, what I really liked seeing.

One of the portraits was of Merle Oberon, which I found fascinating because I didn’t realize that she was half South Asian. The blurb next to her portrait talked about how she had to hide her mixed race identity because of discrimination. I think of how I have half Asian kids and how it’s kind of no big deal because being mixed race a) is kind of a meaningless term – what is “race” anyhow? and b) is so common these days. I once read a statistic that the majority of kids will be of mixed race in the next ten years. (Or something like that – don’t quote me – it’s one of those statistics that’s stuck in my head, but I don’t remember where I heard it.) So thinking about being a mixed race person when it wasn’t so common and even considered scandalous is one of those things that I find really interesting to read about.

The day after that, we went to The National Museum of Health and Medicine, which is just a mile from my house. It’s a collection of body parts and medical equipment and photos and artifacts and such things related to the human body and how it can fall apart. The collection was started during the Civil War when doctors were encouraged to keep specimens of body parts and what not for research purposes. The most famous thing about it is that it has the bullet that killed Lincoln, along with some of his hair and the bloody cuffs of the doctor who operated on him. I didn’t realize this, but it also has a piece of President Garfield’s spine as well, from when he was shot. I kind of feel like you need to have a very strong stomach and sense of curiosity to go to this museum. It was especially interesting to go to the museum with my aunt who is a physician. She reminisced about her medical school days and pointed out the body parts and organs that were on display and told me all about what they did. The lady is amazing – she is 77 years old and still sees patients three days a week.

The last day of my Aunt’s visit, we took a trip to Longwood Gardens. What a beautiful riot of summer colour! I’m always glad for a visit to Longwood Gardens.

Labor Day Monday I took the three kids to the Renaissance Festival. I hadn’t originally planned to go over Labor Day weekend, but on Sunday our friends told us they were planning on going the next day, so it seemed like as good a time as any to go. Plus our other weekends in September were going to be full of kids’ activities. We had a great time. We saw the jousting (twice!), fencing shows, acrobats, Shakespeare parodies. We listened to loud feet-stomping, heart expanding music, ate turkey legs, reveled in people watching. The weather was gorgeous – warm and sunny with a breeze at just the right moments. The kids got sticky with melted ice cream and dirty with playground mulch. We laughed and wandered and had an all around great time.

I think I did really well pacing our day. Once I (like Oliver Burkeman says) get used to the idea that you can’t see everything, then I think I could enjoy the things I did see without the sense that I should be somewhere else. I had each of the kids pick one thing they really wanted to do, and then planned around that. The 12 year old wanted to eat fried food, the 7 year old wanted to see the jousting, the 4 year old wanted to ride the pony, I wanted to see shows and laugh. So I looked at the schedule and map and plotted it out as soon as I got there. I picked four shows to anchor our day – 12 noon jousting, 2:00pm Death Scenes from Shakespeare, 3:30p Vixes En Garde, 5pm Piper Jones show. Then in and around we ate turkey legs (side note – these have gotten really expensive! They are now $12 a pop. I guess I’m okay with it, but it’s a little alarming), went to the pirate playground, shopped, and went on the Pony ride. It also helped that we met up with our friends who had three kids, so the older kids could take off together while I stuck with the little kids.

Coordinating with my friends was a little difficult at first because with all the mass of humanity at the Ren Faire – and it was very crowded – my cell phone couldn’t find a way to make calls or send text messages. I think next time I need a better, more concrete plan ahead of time of where to meet people. One we met up with my friends, though, I really enjoyed Ren Fairing with friends.

Oh, and the one thing I was the MOST excited about – they’ve put in water bottle fillers at our Ren Faire! For years, I’ve carted so four full Nalgenes with me to the Faire, because I’m too cheap to pay for water at the Faire. Well this year, there were three water bottle fillers (labelled “drinking water from the well”) Yay. Ren Faire gets better and better every year!

Inspirational Thought of the week: We are due for a huge decluttering effort at our house, so I’ve been listening to Decluttering and organizational podcasts for inspiration. Last week I was listening to A Slob Comes Clean’s episode called “How to Get Motivated” and she said

“There is no way to fail at better.”

Whoa. Her point is that even throwing away one piece of trash makes things better, and as long as you are moving towards “better” no matter how small the steps, you are not failing. I have to remember that when the prospect of decluttering (or anything large) feels overwhelming.

The 7 year old can be a bit of a stubborn grumpy bear. But when something goes the way he wants it too, his delight is unparalleled. His latest catch phrase when something goes well – “Perfection wins again!”
I have no idea where he got that phrase from, but it makes me really happy every time he says it.

Grateful For:
-School Buses and school bus drivers. Amazingly, the school bus was on time in both the morning and the afternoon last week. Well except for one day when the bus broke down and they had to get a replacement. Even so, the bus ended up only being thirty minutes late, which seems pretty efficient given that they had to go find a whole other bus and driver. So I’m grateful for the school bus and school bud driver that takes my kid to school safely.

-A nice visit with my mom and my aunt. I don’t get to see my aunt very often, so it was lovely to have her stay with us for five nights.

– The kids’ piano teacher. A few weeks ago, while out for a walk with my 12 year old, she said to me, “You know what? Piano is my favorite extracurricular activity!” This made me really happy to hear because she loves music so much but there were a couple of years where we fought a lot about lessons and practicing. I give a lot of credit for this to her piano teacher who is so patient and positive with her but also challenges her.

Looking Forward To:

-Lunch with a friend. I start working on a show in October, with some hours here and there the next couple of weeks, so I want to schedule some fun social weekday things in September before my schedule makes that difficult.

-Planning our trip to Malaysia. On the way to Longwood Gardens, we listened to some podcasts about travel to Malaysia. (I like listening to destination/ travel podcasts for trip inspiration.) It really got me eager to start researching and planning the activities we will do with our four days there. It seems like all the really beautiful beaches are a bit farther than we want to go with just four days, so we’ll probably just stay in Kuala Lumpur.

-September declutter-palooza! As I mentioned above, we’ve decided that September will be a big month for decluttering since I will have a lighter schedule and am home more. The main areas are the attic and the current toy room, which needs to be cleaned out so we can put the guest bed in there and make the guest bedroom into the 12 year old’s room. The 12 year old currently shares a room with her two younger siblings. It’s partly because I can’t wrap my brain around setting up a room for her (so many logistics! Need to buy new furniture!), also partly because I like having all the kids on the same floor as us and giving the 12 year old her own room would mean putting her downstairs. Anyhow – I know I need to just get over this because a 12 year old should not have to share a room with her 7 year old brother and 5 year old sister if she can help it. (Although part of me thinks – my father shared a room with 7 siblings. But he lived in rural Taiwan. Life was different… Everyone looks at me like I’m a horrible mother when I tell them my 12 year old still shares a room with her siblings.) Anyhow, I’m excited about/dreading declutter-palooza. I know our house will be a lot better once we go through things and purge and shift. But… so much work, and I get attached to things. Hence listening to decluttering podcasts for inspiration. Maybe I should document the efforts here for some accountability.

What We Ate:

Monday: Stir fried eggplant with black bean sauce and tofu.

Tuesday: Tortellini with sausage. Fruit on the side.

Wednesday: Grilled chicken drumsticks and cucumber and cabbage noodle salad with black bean sauce.

Thursday: Pasta Salad. This was a kitchen sink meal. We came home on the late side and I didn’t have anything planned, so I chopped a bunch of tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers, and threw them in a bowl with some cooked pasta and canned tuna. Added a red wine vinegar vinegrette. It was much tastier than I thought it would be.

Friday: Pizza (the Husband made) and Young Woman and the Sea, a recent film about Trudy Ederle, who in 1926 was the first woman to swim the English Channel, and she did it faster than any of the men before her. Disney sport movies are always predictably sentimental, and I am a sucker for that. I really liked this movie. I thought the story was inspiring and performances delightful to watch.

Saturday: Dinner out at The Olive Lounge after our trip to Longwood Gardens. I had a really delicious truffle pasta.

Sunday: Burgers and hot dogs and grilled zucchini. We had some friends over to grill- one of those super casual impromptu gatherings that you can have when you know your friends won’t judge you for not cleaning.

Monday: Grilled cheese and fruit. We didn’t get hime from the Ren Faire until almost 8pm so dinner was something quick and easy.

Weekly recap + what we ate: camping and end of summer adventures

Shenandoah views.

The kids have started school! Even the 4 year old starts a new pre-school class, so lots of new beginnings for everyone. Last week was pretty packed. As a last final adventure, I took the two little kids camping for two nights in Shenandoah National Park. The 12 year old declined to come, so she stayed at home. She did, however, have an adventure on her own in that she took public transportation on her own for the first time. She had walked to meet the Husband for lunch and then took the bus home. The ride was probably less than two miles, but it feels like a big milestone.

I had originally planned for a low key week at home this last week before school, but then I was feeling a little wistful that I hadn’t gone camping yet this year. So I looked at the campground and saw that there were still lots of camp sites available. After going back an forth- is it too much to go camping on such short notice? Shouldn’t we just lay low the week before school starts? Can I get everything ready in 24 hours?- I decided to go for it and booked two nights at Big Meadows Campground. I went on a big grocery run, pulled all the camping gear out of the crawl space, packed clothes and toothbrushes, made a road trip play list for the littles (by their request – Disney tunes, Hamilton, and Six), and then we were off.

It was a short camping trip, but it felt unhurried in that way that time expands when one is able to fully disconnect from life and from technology. I think for 36 hours, I was phone free, save for taking pictures and twenty minutes on the free wifi at the Lodge where we had stopped to use the bathroom. We left at 11:30am on Tuesday and were pulling into our camp site at 2:30pm, after having stopped briefly for a picnic lunch. In the past when we camped at Big Meadows, I’ve opted for a walk in site – by walk in, I mean a few hundred feet from the parking lot. I like that they are more secluded and surrounded by trees. However, since this trip was going to be so short, and also since it was just me and the two little kids, I chose a camp site nearer to the bathrooms with parking at the site. My reasoning was two fold – 1) I didn’t want to spend time hauling my gear from the car to the camp site and back since we were only spending two nights, and 2) I wanted to be close to the bathrooms so I wouldn’t have to walk too far if one of the kids needed to go.

The first evening, we (really, I) set up the campsite. Then I made a fire in the fire pit and cooked dinner while the kids played. They swung in the hammock, and played with their trucks (I brought two toy trucks with us), poked the fire, watched leaves burn, and pretty much amused themselves while I got dinner going. After dinner we had some more time around the campfire and then I made a batch of hot chocolate. Once we were done the hot chocolate and the fire had died, we brushed teeth and went to bed. I slept okay the first night. The first night was was pretty miserable, to be honest, and I couldn’t figure out why. Somehow I couldn’t curl up for warmth or stretch out fully for comfort so I just tossed and turned all night. When I woke up at 6:30am, I finally realized why the sleeping bag I was in was so uncomfortable – I was sleeping in the 7 year old’s sleeping bag and he ended up with mine. After an early morning trip to the bathroom, I switched our sleeping bags back and managed to snag another hour and half of much more comfortable sleep.

The next day was our only full day in Shenandoah. I didn’t want to spend time driving, so I decided on a hike that we could walk to from the campsite, Lewis Falls Trail. Part of the trail to Lewis Falls is along the Appalachian Trail, which I find kind of neat. The Falls themselves were a little disappointing because there wasn’t really a good view of them, and you couldn’t go to the base of the falls, but we still had a nice hike and there were plenty of rocky scrambles and breathtaking views to enjoy. Perhaps not the most interesting hike in Shenandoah, but it’s close to the campsite, and not having to get back in the car at all that day was a huge plus.

We ended up hiking all day – we left at 10:30am and didn’t get home until 4:30pm, hiking about 7 miles total. The hike went surprisingly well with a 4 (almost 5) year old and a 7 year old. Even though it wasn’t the most difficult or unique hike, it was definitely a good ramble in the woods. I even got to play the rainbow game – it’s amazing how, even though the trail looks to be the same greens and browns, we could still find all the colours of the rainbow if we just looked:

Things that I think made this all day hike a success:
1) The weather was beautiful. It wasn’t too hot. In fact, when we started it was a little on the chilly side. Nothing makes my kids crankier than having to trudge somewhere in blazing hot weather.
2) Snacks. I packed lots of snacks, plus lunch. Granola bars, trail mix (mixed nuts, dried cherries, pretzels and m&ms), carrots, apples. Lunch was salami, Triscuits, cucumbers. When the kids started flagging, we would just sit and have a snack.
3) Going at the kids’ pace. I largely let them dictate how fast we went. If they wanted to stop and scramble on a rocky outcrop, I let them. If they wanted to gather armfuls of sticks, I let them. If they just wanted to sit on a log for a bit, cool.
4) While we’re on the subject – sticks. OMG the amount of stick collecting that happened! Small sticks in their backpack to take back to put in the camp fire that night. Large sticks that became walking sticks. Sticks that were swords and pistols. One humungous stick that was so large they carried it together for a good mile.
5) Walkie talkies and binoculars. Sometimes my kids find hiking boring – it doesn’t always last too long, but periodically they will get punchy with each other on a hike. Walkie talkies provided an excellent amusement for them on the hike – they insisted that one person walk in front of me and one person walk behind me so that they could talk to each other on the walkie talkies. The binoculars also got a lot of use, though, I should really get a second pair – there was a fair bit of fighting over sharing the one pair.

After that hike, we came back to the campground. I got to spend 30 minutes reading in the hammock, which was divine. Eventually, I got up and made a fire and started dinner. Half way through boiling the water for the mac and cheese, though, I ran out of butane. I usually travel with two butane canisters, but for whatever reason I only had one with me on this trip – it was whatever cannister was in the bottom of the camping bin and I foolishly thought it had enough butane in it to get me through 36 hours. It didn’t. And there I was with a pot of half cooked pasta. There was a deflated sense of panic. But then I put the pot of water over the campfire grill and, doing things the old fashioned way, I managed to cook the pasta and make the mac n cheese. I was actually surprised that the water boiled over the fire. After dinner we had smores then went to bed. I slept much better than the night before, though I did rotate my sleeping bag around mid way through the night because I think I was sleeping on an incline with my head lower than my feet, and I can’t sleep comfortably that way.

The next morning, before breakfast we took an impromptu stroll. I wanted to explore the campgrounds and scout out which campsites I might want to book next time. Well, before I knew it, we had wandered onto the Appalachian Trail, the part of the trail that goes around the campground. We weren’t prepared for another hike – I was wearing Crocs! – but we figured why not. We ended up hiking for about 45 minutes, the kid found some rocky scrambles and nice views.

Eventually we found a path from the trail back to the campsite where we had cold breakfast, and I mourned the inability to have a cup of hot tea since I had no more butane. Then I started packing everything up so we could leave. The kids amused themselves by playing in the hammock. In a stroke of brilliance, I rigged up a rope so that they could swing themselves in the hammock by pulling on the rope. I need to remember that for next time because they are always asking me to swing them in the hammock, which I find eventually gets tedious.

It took me about an hour to pack up the campsite, and bundle everything into the car. We headed home, stopping for lunch as a diner in Warrenton, where I had the liver and onions. After I ordered, a lady sat down next to us at the counter and started talking about how much she hated liver and onions, which I thought was funny. We ended up talking as she waited for her to go order, and she explained to me that when she was pregnant with her now grown daughter, she worked in an office above the cafeteria, and when they made liver and onions, the smell wafted up into her office and made her feel sick. Fair enough. Liver an onions is one of those dishes I like to order at diners because it’s something I never would cook myself at home.

Anyhow, there was a lot of traffic around the DC area when I got home, so it took much longer to get home than I thought it would. I ended up having to call into a work meeting from the car – I had originally expected to be home well before the meeting, but I ended up getting home twenty minutes after the meeting started. Thank goodness for Teams and the flexibility it allows me. All in all, a successful camping trip! I can’t wait to go again.

Notes to myself for the next camp trip:
– must get some camp mugs so that the kids can drink the hot chocolate. I ended up giving them my travel mug, but then it meant I couldn’t have tea.
– If I’m going to go on six hour hikes, I need to invest in a trowel. Both kids at some point told me they had to go #2. Peeing in the woods is one thing, but I didn’t really feel comfortable letting them #2 in the woods unless I could properly bury it. So next time, I’ll bring a trowel.
-pack dishwashing gloves. I did a serious number aggravating the eczema on my hands with all the dishwashing I did over the 36 hours. My hands were so cracked that I could barely make a fist. So note for next time – pack dishwashing gloves.
-the kids don’t like Provolone cheese. I had wanted a hard cheese that could stand up to not being kept in the cooler, so I bought a block of Provolone. The kids refused to eat it. Next time, just bring cheddar and parmesan. Camping is not the time to try new flavors.
-The thinner flour sack kitchen towels dry faster, so bring those rather than the terrycloth kitchen towels.
– bring smaller trash bags. I brought 13 gallon trash bags, like I normally do, but I ended up taking the trash to the dumpster twice a day because I didn’t want to store it in the car (my site didn’t have a bear box.). It seemed wasteful to use a 13 gallon trash bag for half a days’ worth of garbage so next time I should bring smaller trash bags.
-Bring more long sleeved outfits. The weather was much colder than I had anticipated – I had even looked at the weather before I left and for some reason, seeing that the weather would be in the low 70s/mid 60s didn’t register as cold. After all, the weather was high 80s in DC. Welp, once we got to the mountains, we were cold. The only long sleeved outfits that I had packed for the kids were their pajamas and a sweatshirt or hoodie. Though of course the 7 year old’s sweatshirt was a size too small. Oh well, we managed. We all did wear the same clothes for the entire 36 hours, since it was the only long sleeved clothes that we had. We were going to get grimy from camping anyway, so I figured this was fine.
-Re-listen to this podcast episode from The Art of Manliness podcast. All about camping and camping gear. You kind of have to get past the bro tone of the podcast (what else could you expect with that title?) but I found some really helpful advice here about how to take care of gear.
-Good move – I unpacked and aired out all the camping equipment as soon as I got to the house and the majority of the camping gear was packed away within a few hours of our arrival home. I don’t always have the energy to air out all the camping gear right away, but I now see that it really pays off to make the effort to get it done right away. We got home at 3:20pm, and everything was aired and packed up by 6:00pm. (The kids’ sleeping bags, I had hung up to air out in the morning before we left for that impromptu hike, so I didn’t have to do that again at home.) If I don’t get the gear aired out and packed away right away, it tends to linger in the basement for days, even weeks. So yay me for getting it done right off the bat. I also started making lists in Notes of what was in each bin , including what items I will need to replenish in the bin next time we go camping. Sometimes these things are a little tedious, but are for sure gifts to future me. (In cast you are wondering, I like using this list from REI as my camping packing list.)

The rest of the week/weekend was pretty full. On Friday, I had lunch with a friend and her 5 year old before going to the open house for the 7 year old’s school. We were supposed to meet his teacher, but she had been in a minor car accident the day before so couldn’t come to the open house. We dropped of school supplies and the 7 year old still got to see his new classroom. Then in the evening we went to the pool, probably one of the last pool visits this summer as our pool closes after labor day. It was a little cool in the evening so we only stayed for an hour before coming home for pizza and Glee.

Saturday, we went out to visit my friend who lives in southeastern Maryland. It was a great visit – we swam in her pool, she made us the tastiest meal (burger and roasted vegetables), we got to visit with her neighbor’s sheep, she showed us her dock, and she taught the kids how to make Brazilian cheese bread. These tender little balls of doughy cheesy goodness were so tasty. She’s shared the recipe and I can’t wait to make them myself.

Saturday evening, my mother and aunt flew in for a visit, and we went from my friend’s house directly to the airport. We got to the airport a little early, so instead of going to the cellphone waiting lot, we went to a nearby park where you can watch the airplanes take off and land. I’ve always wanted to bring the kids to this park, but there is never any parking because it’s a pretty popular park. We were able to find parking and sat and watched planes take off while the kids played on the playground. Planes are so loud! I could feel deep visceral vibrations every time a plane went by.

On Sunday, we took my mom and aunt down to the Mall to see the monuments. It was actually quite hot and there was no small amount of whining from the kids about having to do so much walking. I feel like there is a lot to see in D.C., but unless you are on the Mall, it’s not always a very pleasant city to walk around in. Nonetheless, I think we covered a lot of ground. In four hours we saw:
-The outside of the White House (and the buildings around it)
The Old Post Office Tower. This is one of those hidden gems of D.C., I think. The Old Post Office Tower is located in the Waldorf Astoria and is operated by the National Park Service. You can go up the Tower and get an amazing view of Washington, D.C. The view is not as spectacular as the Washington Monument, but tickets for the Washington Monument are really hard to come by, and I think the Old Post Office Tower is an easier alternative.

-WWII Memorial
And of course in the distance we saw (because on the Mall you can’t avoid seeing) the Capitol building, the Lincoln Memorial, and Jefferson Memorial. We also walked by the WWI Memorial, which I didn’t actually know existed. I’ll have to go back and check that one out. All told, I think we walked about seven miles, and it definitely felt like a typical touristy DC day.

Grateful for (the camping edition)
-The friend who, four or five years ago called us from the REI garage sale and said, “There’s a really nice tent here for sale. I think it will be perfect for you guys. I’m going to buy it and you can pay me back.” Every time I go camping, and set up the tent that is just the right amount of space for us (currently), I am so grateful that our friend M. saw this tent and thought of us.
-The same friend lending me marshmallow sticks and an extra camp chair.
-The kids being old enough to go to the bathroom together on their own. One of the trickiest things about camping with the two little kids is that someone always needs to go pee. Well, this trip, because our campsite was just two sites down from the bathroom, I felt pretty comfortable sending them to the bathroom together. In past years, I’ve brought a potty, or I’ve told them they can’t go to the bathroom until we put out the fire, or they’ve just peed in the woods. I love that now I can stay sitting by the fire and send the kids together to the bathroom.
-Dry weather. Because camping in the rain would have sucked.
-National Parks. I’m glad that there are National Parks, and that they provide so many opportunities to experience awe.

Looking Forward To:
-The kids being back in school. I have not been for a run or done any yoga since being home with the kids. I love my kids, but I also like it when they go to school and I have time to run and do things without having to referee an argument or feed someone or open a package or or or or…
-September house decluttering. September has been declared the month where we finally purge and declutter. I do not look forward to doing this, but I just have to think about how much nicer it will be when there is more open space in the house, and I no longer feel the burden of all the stuff in the attic waiting to be used.
-Reading Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. Earlier this year, when I posted plans of reading down my TBR, so many people said I needed to move Homegoing to the top of the pile. You all were right. I’m only four chapters in, and it’s beautiful. Hard and sad, too.

What We Ate: With detailed camping notes.
Monday: Black Bean Tacos with Mango Slaw. Sort of based on this recipe from Love and Lemons. This was a super easy no-cook meal. (Well, I did warm up the tortillas.) Vegan for me. The kids ate theirs with feta cheese.

Tuesday (Camping Day One):
Lunch Picnic – Chicken Salad Sandwiches, carrots and cucumbers, apple slices.
Dinner: Curry Ramen. I prepped most of this at home; I tossed sliced onions and carrots in a container with olive oil and curry powder. Chopped up some cabbage in a separate bag (I would have put this with the onions and carrots, but that container was already full.) At the campsite: Sauteed the onion/carrot/curry mixture until barely tender. Add water, ramen, frozen shrimp and cook until the noodles were done. I also impulsively prepped a freeze dried camp meal that had been in my camping box for a few years. It was really salty and pretty terrible. I don’t often throw out food, but I threw that camp meal out.

Wednesday (Camping Day Two)
Breakfast – Bacon and egg burritos and fruit (strawberries and blueberries). Bacon is a “must have” camping food for me. For the eggs, at home I cracked them into a container and brought the container so I wouldn’t have to worry about breaking the eggs in transport. I always cook the bacon first and then fry the eggs in the bacon fat, that way I don’t have to bring extra oil on the trip. The kids did not really like this. I’m told it’s the Provolone’s fault because they could taste it on the eggs. Oh well. Typically they love this kind of thing.
Lunch – eaten on the trail – Salami, Triscuits, carrots and cucumbers. (I had planned to bring the Provolone, but that was quickly squashed.) For snacks I brought trail mix, peanut butter crackers, and more carrots and apple slices.
Dinner – Mac and cheese with hot dogs and corn cooked on the grill. This was the night I ran out of butane. For camping, I bring the mac n cheese where the cheese sauce is include . It’s easier to mix at the campsite if the mac and cheese comes with a cheese sauce already and not the powder. And I don’t have to bring butter that way. We cooked the hot dogs and the corn over the fire. The corn I prepped at home by rubbing it with olive oil, salt, and lots of pepper, then wrapping it tightly in foil. Once we got the fire going at the campsite, i just tossed the corn onto the hot embers and let it cook. For dessert we had s’mores. I’m not a fan of the Hersey chocolate so I always buy a bar of nice chocolate to use in s’mores. The 7 year old had picked out a dark chocolate raspberry bar, and it proved to be delicious in a s’more. Wil try that again.

Thursday: (Day Three Camping and home)
Breakfast – Yogurt, fruit, cereal. Even before we ran out of butane, I wanted breakfast on the departure day to be cold and simple so that we didn’t have to dirty anymore dishes.
Lunch – stopped at Frost Diner on the way home.
Dinner – (and we’re home.) – The family had burritos since they had gone to get haircuts at a salon next to the Taco Restaurant. I ate the leftovers they brought home since I stayed behind to pack up the camping gear.

Friday: Pizza (take out) and Glee.

Saturday: Eat out, after our airport pick up: Japanese (I had the ramen and a spicy scallop roll)

Sunday: Burmese food take-out, picked up on our way home from walking the monuments. It was very tasty.

Weekly recap + what we ate: Opening Nights and Mother’s Day in the City

I opened my show! The 12 year old opened her show! The 12 year old closed her show! Yay! It’s been a very packed week.

First of all – the 12 year old’s middle school production of Annie Jr. was delightful! She played Tessie, one of the orphans. Tessie is the one who says, “Oh my goodness! oh my goodness!” The Husband noted that he could pick her out in a crowd because of the huge plaid pocket I put in her pinafore. I couldn’t go to the first performance because I was working, but I went to the second performance, which was also the closing performance. It’s so funny seeing the whole show come together after spending all that time running lines with her. There is something very mechanical about running lines and I was so impressed by how comfortable she was onstage. (In the program, the 12 year old thanked her parents from runnign lines with her!”) And the whole production – I mean obviously the production values aren’t terribly high because it’s middle school, but it had it’s own handmade charm. There was one scene with a couch, and then the couch had to move downstage for the next scene so we watched the kids move it and afterwards I asked the 12 year old why the couch wasn’t on wheels? And she said, “Well, we borrowed it from the Teacher’s Lounge.” Which I think perfectly sums up the whole thing.

In the program, the twelve year old thanked, among others, “…her parents who helped her prepare for auditions, run lines, an boost her confidence.” I thought that was really sweet of her.

And that night after she came home from getting ice cream with her cast mates, she started crying because the whole thing was over and oh how I know that feeling – I think that is one thing that makes theatre so special – that high you get from doing something ephemeral and the low you get from realizing that it’s ephemeral. And even though you know you can audition for more shows, you’ll never repeat this very exact show again with these very exact cast mates.

The night after the 12 year old had her shows, I opened my show. There was a very fancy party afterwards. I wore a dress – the other dress I bought at Macy’s in March when I bought that red jumpsuit that I wrote about last month. This dress probably isn’t quite fancy enough for an opening night party, but it is comfortable and forgiving – the smocked waist is elastic – and flowy, which I like. I wish it came in another colour, because black/white/grey isn’t my favorite color palatte. I don’t wear make-up, and have no clue what to do with my hair now that it hasn’t been cut for a year and is looking a little overgrown, so I think maybe the whole look is a little unpolished – but there are limits to what I want to do with myself and hair and make-up don’t quite make it into those boundaries right now. I did wear heels, though, so there’s that.

The party had all sorts of tasty Asian inspired food, a photo booth, lots of loud music. I had fun talking to people I don’t usually get to talk to. The best thing, though was the fried pickled ginger. Who would have thought to do that? It was DELICIOUS.

The opening night party was the Saturday before Mother’s Day, so it was nice that I kind of had a pass to sleep in (until 8am!) then next morning. All week, the kids had hinted that they had planned a special Mother’s Day. Not to be a grinch, but I kind of don’t love celebrating Mother’s Day. (Or my birthday, or anything where I have to be the center of attention). I don’t like surprises, so the family was going to tell me what they had planned, but then they were giving out tickets to teh White House Garden Tour for Mother’s Day Sunday, and I asked the Husband if he wanted to go. And he said, “But we’ve planned Mother’s Day!” and I reminded him that my father was in town and he could watch the kids and when would we have a chance for free childcare while we go out together again? And he said okay. So on Mother’s Day Sunday, the 11 year old made French toast (perhaps with help from her siblings – I’m not sure since I was in bed), we ate the French toast, I took the 4 year old to her agility class and then when I got home, the Husband and I took the Metro downtown.

First stop was coffee. The Husband had wanted to check out this Indonesian coffee shop for ages, but we were never in the area at the right time. It is a fifteen minute walk from the White House so it was the perfect pitstop. I had a chai and a cherry croissant. The chai was delicious- bitingly spicy and just a hint of sweetness. I asked afterwards who made the chai mix and the barista enthusiastically pointed me to the company, Soul Chai. Definitely check them out if you like your chia spicy and not sugary. I’ll be ordering some for sure.

After coffee, we proceeded to the White House. Now getting tickets to the White House Gardens tour is not exactly a rarified thing. Thousands of tickets are passed out for each weekend of garden tours, and they are free. (Honestly, I’d be annoyed if they weren’t free…) However, I was able to get tickets through work, which meant that I didn’t have to stand in line at 8:30am to get tickets. tl:dr – I found the whole experience rather… underwhelming and would not stand in line for tickets unless you were an American history/government fan.

I think calling it a “Gardens Tour” was a little bit misleading. It was more of a “Grounds Tour”. The pre-ordained path allowed people to view the gardens from a distance, but there weren’t a lot of flowers to be seen as we walked along. My take away – the White House grounds is a lot of grass and trees. Which, I supposed makes sense – grass because you need to land helicopters, and trees because it seems like planting a tree is a beloved activity for past residents of the White House to leave their mark and/or honour an occasion. And I guess if I’m being honest, while the horticultural side of the garden tour felt pallid, the historical part of the tour did feel quite momentous. Here was a tree planted by the Obamas, here are the windows to the Oval Office, here is the Rose Garden and that walk way seen so many time on the West Wing. So I suppose what the garden tour lacked for me in actual garden, it made up in weighty historical significance and that did make for some pondering.

After the Gardens Tour, we decided to take in a museum. The White House is next to the Renwick, which is an American Art Museum that focuses on craft and handiwork. I’ve seen several things there, and really found it intriguing so I was eager to go again. I thought there was an Amish quilt exhibit there, but when I arrived, I found that the Amish quilt exhibit was at the American Art Museum in Gallery Place/ Chinatown, which was seven or eight blocks away. Oops. We took in the exhibits at the Renwick anyway, the best being this exhibit of nets hung from the cieling. It was visually appealing, but also relaxing experience because you had to lay down on the floor to get the full impact:

After we took in the other exhibits in the Renwick, we decided to go to the American Art Museum and see the Amish Quilt exhibit after all since the restaurant that we picked for dinner was in that direction anyway.

I thought this exhibit was stunning and though provoking. What struck me, apart from the visual aspect of the quilts, was the idea that all these quilts hung in a museum, yet they were all labelled “Artist: unidentified” – it made me ponder the tension between quilts that are quite skillfully and and artistically assembled – the patterns and colours are quite intricate – and the Amish who are a modest, attention shunning people. Highly recommend this exhibit.

After the exhibit, we went to dinner. Recently the New York Times published and article entitled “The 25 Best Restaurants in Washington, DC Right Now.” (Hilariously, the comments are full of people noting that a lot of the restaurants on the list are in the Maryland or Virginia suburb, so the title of the article is misleading. I’m surprised by the vehemence of some of the comments.) Some of the restaurants on the list I’ve been to, but many were new to me, especially those in the city since we very rarely eat out in the city. There is no where I feel my suburban mom-ness more than in a hip DC restaurant. At any rate, we decided to check out a restaurant on the list, Baan Siam, a Thai restaurant in Mount Vernon Square, near Gallery Place. This isn’t like your standard Thai restaurant – pad thai and drunken noodles are nowhere to be seen. The food is from northern Thailand. The Husband and I ordered fried pumpkin, fried spicy mushrooms (enoki mushroom – this was novel because I’d never had fried enoki mushrooms and the long thin shape made it well suited for finger food), spicy chicken in banana leaf (very spicy, but also sweet, sour, and funky in a good way), shrimp chili paste fried rice with fried pork belly, and a small cucumber salad. It was all super flavorful and tasty. And for dessert, we had mango with sticky rice, because of course.

After dinner we took the metro back home, arriving back at the house aroun 7:45pm. When we got home, things were pretty quiet, so the Husband and I snuck in the back door and collapsed on the living room couch waiting for someone to notice we were home. No one did. Everyone ended up going to bed super late- not ideal for a Sunday night, but it was all fine.

Grateful for – the Tech Week edition:

-Blue highlighter. This is sort of a weedy work hack, but – There is one entrance I cue (the green post it) that is in the middle of an orchestral interlude. I like to think I read music pretty well, but I always felt iffy about this entrance, never confident that I was cuing it in the right place. Reading a piano reduction of the orchestral part can be confusing because there are so many notes in the page and I have to figure out which notes correspond to what I’m hearing, and if I don’t count it completely accurately, I get easily lost. Most nights it was kind of a prayer and a “feeling” for where the cue was. So one day during tech, I took a blue highlighter and highlighted the notes of the melody. And suddenly, I could see what I was listening for and I could follow the music and cue the sequence perfectly. Sometimes I just have to highlight what I need and ignore the rest of the notes and I won’t get lost. I’m sure there’s a life lesson in there somewhere.

-dropping my flashlight. One of my backstage tools is my mini Maglite. It is essential for lighting the way backstage when everything is dark. I converted my light with a kit so that it is push button operated instead of twist. Anyhow, at the start of tech, it was working somewhat sporadically which was kind of annoying and I was going to order myself a new one. Then at one point, I accidentally dropped the Maglite on the floor and it started to work! Yay!

-The Husband who held down the fort – handling pick up and dinner and bedtime on his own all week. Also while dealing with a whole slew of plumbing problems at our rental house. And then he even brought all the kids to my dress rehearsal, even though it meant a late night for everyone. I think the 4 year old fell asleep in the last act, but the other two kid watched the whole thing.

-middle school drama programs. For giving my kid such a great experience. For giving her an outlet to be silly and make friends. For giving her a place to go after school. For bringing the community together to cheer these talented and enthusiastic kids on.

Looking Forward To:

-Being home in the evenings – now that my show is open, I’m looking forward to being able to pick up the kids from the school bus, make dinner, put kids to bed and zone out in front of the tv with the Husband watching Brooklyn 99 or 30 Rock or maybe we’ll get to that third season of Ted Lasso.

-Swim Season – We’ve signed up for the pool, and I’m excited to spend time at the pool and to cheer the 12 year old on at swim meets. There were a couple days last week that were blazingly hot and I thought how it feels like summer, but we’re not quite there yet.

-Dirty Meat Party – There is currently twenty pounds of meat marinating in my fridge in preparation for the grilling party that we have every time a certain colleague/friend of mine is in town working on a show. It’s probably the biggest party we throw every year and while I don’t always like having 25 people descend on my house, I do love seeing everyone having a good time. There is some rain in the forecast, which makes me a little nervous because I am ill equipped to put 25 people inside my house. But we can’t postpone it because then the meat will be over-marinated. Also – the party has always been called the Dirty Meat Party, but maybe I should reconsider because as the 7 year old ran to the school bus, he called out, “I can’t wait to eat dirty meat!!!!”

-Reading this – middle aged female pirate goes on adventures. It’s proving delightful so far. I’ve laughed out loud so many times while reading it.

What we ate:
The only dinner I made at home last week was Friday night, my day off. I made this Pearl Couscous with Creamy Feta and Chickpeas . I added some shrimp in the last 5 minutes of baking. It was very tasty, but I wish there was a way to make it a one pot meal. perhaps just cooking it all on the stovetop and not baking it?

In lieu of the other dinners that week, here is another “At Work All Day” lunchbox picture:

Lunch: broccoli quinoa salad, which I had made last week and still working through. Plum.

Dinner: marinated beans with potatoes and arugula. Avocado and a boiled egg to eat along with.

Snacks: cut up apples and hummus, protein bar (from Costco, really just a glorified candy bar), two carrots (yes, I just toss them in whole. easier that way), beef stick (actually for the drive home to snack on when I get sleepy.)

July so far + what we ate: Catching up

July Adventures.

How is it already almost the end of July? It’s been a lot this month – and I drafted this post when it was a weekly update and it’s gotten longer and longer and now it’s practically a monthly update.

So the short version: The husband and kids came home from Chicago! I closed a show! My parents came to town! I went camping! My brother and his family came to visit! It’s a billion degrees outside and we sweltered! We went on all sorts of adventures while falling steadily behind in housework and life admin! The pile of laundry grows mountainous! I started rehearsing a second show! It never. lets. up.

I know most people work and manage life simultaneously all the time (like the Husband, for one), but prioritizing and balancing all the things is hard, and I’m not used to doing it for such long stretches of time. I’ve been working on one show or another – or sometimes two at a time – since February with only three weeks of in that time, and most weeks with only one day off. I’m always grateful for the work, but man… Usually when I’m in the thick of things, I can see a stretch of time off from work and can push tasks off til then, but it’s been harder to do that so far this year. Plus commuting for this summer gig. Spending 60-90 minutes a day in a car might not feel like a lot in the moment, but it does eat up my day. Compared to my regular gig which is like 30-60 minutes a day, this gig is an additional 30 minutes a day that I’m losing. Which might not seem like a lot, but that’s prime laundry folding time right there. Anyhow. I’m really excited by the projects that I’ve worked on and the people I’ve been working with this year, so I’m not saying I regret taking these jobs. It’s just a lot of balls are getting dropped right now. I need to remind myself that I’m lucky to have work in an industry where sustained work in one location can be hard to find and find better ways to tackle life tasks.

Ever since I opened my first show and the family got back from Chicago I’ve felt out of my regular routine – there was adjusting to the family being back and also to not having to be at the theatre every day for the week I was in performance, and being home with the six year old. Then my family visiting and then starting a new show, with a very different rehearsal schedule from my last show. I think I need better anchors in my life so that the constant change does not throw me as much. I haven’t even been keeping with the small habits like ten minutes of yoga or Wordle or Duolingo. Here’s the thing, I’ve realized, is that there are a million tiny adjustments – a combination of school being out and my current job – and it’s thrown a lot of the habits that I make based on my school year routines out of wack. For example:
– Writing here. For my current gig, I use my personal laptop, which means it mostly lives in my laptop bag and goes back and forth to work with me. Small shift. But it also means that the laptop isn’t sitting on my desk, and it then takes two additional steps to actually be able to sit down and write – 1) take laptop out of bag, 2) find a work surface. Two small steps are enough of a barrier that I’m not writing as much as I would like. I supposed I could write on my tablet or phone, but that’s not as easy.
– Duolingo and Wordle. I used to get to work about ten minutes early, sit down and do the daily Wordle and Duolingo before I turned on my work computer. But with my longer commute, I’m not getting to work with that ten minutes to spare. In fact, I’m usually five minutes late to work. So I’ve definitely lost all my streaks. Thanks, guilt-inducing green owl!
– Cleaning out my car. During the school year, I have a routine on Wednesday mornings. I drop the 11 year old at piano lessons at 7:15a, I go get gas, I go pick up breakfast, I pick up the 11 year old and we head home. Wednesday was always gas day. Even if my tank is 3/4 full, I still stop and get gas on Wednesday mornings while the oldest is at piano lessons. I very rarely have to fill my tank more than once a week so having a designated day and time to get gas takes that mental weight off my plate. Also while I fill my tank, I take all the trash out of my car and shake out the floor mats. Well, lately we’ve had a piano lesson hiatus. And then last week, my father filled my gas tank because he was using ti to run errands, so on Wednesday, there was not need to get gas.\. I was driving around the other day and I noticed that there was more trash in my car than normal, and then it hit me… I haven’t been doing my weekly piano lesson/get gas routine. Such a little errand, but the regularity of it ensured that my car got picked up at least once a week. No wonder the car looked kind of like a pit.
– Daily 10 minute yoga. I used to do 10 minutes of yoga the minute the 3 year old left for school. Inspired by B.J. Fogg’s Tiny Habits, I used the door closing behind the 3 year old as the prompt to lay out my yoga mat and do ten minutes of yoga. Well the 3 year old hasn’t been going to school until much later now that it’s summer, so the yoga mat hasn’t been laid out because we are all leaving the house at the same time. Yet another school year habit downed by shift in schedule. I think I might need to shift to doing 10 minutes of yoga first thing in the morning. This is absolutely fixable. Though when I try to do yoga while the 4 year old is home, I become a human jungle gym and it can be very distracting.
Anyhow, I feel like I need new anchor, new prompts- summer time routines, I guess. (Though the summer is now practically over?). Or maybe when each shift happens, I need to look at the schedule, and re-order, add, or delete things. Something to ponder.

So fun happenings…. After coming back from their trip, the eleven year old went to basketball camp for two weeks while the six year old and hung out at home. Since I didn’t have to be at the theatre every day, it didn’t really seem to make sense to put him in camp, so we just hung out all week and had some staycation type adventures. We went to the park (for four hours one day!), we went ice skating (perfect for an 80 degree day), we went to the library, we went to a puppet show at a different park. I know this would have been prime life catch up time, but I wanted to also prioritize having one on one time with six year old. Since he started school I haven’t had as much one on one time with him and I miss just hanging out with him. This is true for all my kids and I want to do better.

We had a fun family food adventure too – one day I had to be up in Rockville to retrieve my phone (see below, gratitude), and decided to check out a new-ish Taiwanese restaurant that was in the back of a gas station. I had heard about this place in the local magazine and looking at the menu, I could see that it had a lot of the foods I remember eating at the night markets in Taiwan. Walking in, I was a little skeptical. I mean this was in a gas station, after all, and the restroom was a little …. Well, let’s just say when we walked in, the six year old said, “I think someone died here.” But we ordered our food and sat down at one of three tables and waited.

And the food was really tasty! The moment it came to our table, the smells transported me to hot sticky evenings wandering the night market, the air heavy with the smell of fried food and five spice. We ordered popcorn chicken, fried chicken wings, dumplings, the pork chop bento box:

And the best was the stinky tofu. Stinky tofu is fried fermented tofu. It does in truth smell like the inside of an outhouse, but dip it in sweet spicy sauce and take a bite, the crispy exterior giving way to pillowy soft tofu inside. So tasty!

The first weekend in July, we took the Metro down to the Mall and went to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival. The two themes this year were the Ozarks and World Religions. We mostly explored the Ozarks section. There was a lot going on, and we only saw a fraction of the offerings. We went to a talk about boat building traditions, we listened to some bluegrass music while the Husband enjoyed some beer from the Ozarks Brewing Company. We talked to a basket maker.

We had some fried chicken and tamales – I love how the food matches the themes of each year. We talked to a lady who had an exhibit about cooking over an open fire outside with a cast iron pot. We went to a talk by chef Tim Ma, someone who has spent his career reconciling being Chinese American with serving American Chinese food. I really enjoyed hearing him talk about how he didn’t actually learn to cook until he went to culinary school, and how he now tries to. The eleven year old asked a question during the Q&A and I was really proud of her for doing that! Also, he talked about using dehyradted garlic in his cooking because you have to re-constitute it which makes is less likely to burn when you cook with it. Someone asked him where he gets it from, and he said, “I get it from my Chinese food supplier.” which is not helpful for me. I was hoping I could find it at HMart. I’m now on the hunt.

The day was very very hot. At one point we ducked into the American History Museum to fill our water bottles and get a rest from the heat and boy did the air conditioning feel good. I also thought it was a great idea that the Festival was handing out cooling towels as swag. We grabbed one, but should have grabbed two!

After that we walked back up to Chinatown to have dinner at our favorite noodle place, partly inspired by something Tim Ma had said that afternoon. During the Q&A, someone had asked him what his favorite Chinese restaurant was and he said that he always encourages people to eat in Chinatown if they have one because Chinatowns are slowly disappearing across the country due to the pressures of economics and development. Of course we were more than eager to do our part!

Since it was still pretty early when we got to Chinatown, we decided to stop into the Smithsonian Museum for American Art and Portrait Gallery. The Husband and the 11 year old went to explore the galleries while I took the two little kids to the kids’ creative space where they spent most of their time playing with this video portrait set up where you could take multiple portraits of yourself. It was kid of fun to see a whole screen made up of small squares of the kids.

It was certainly a full day – Festival, Museum, Dinner and home before bedtime. How lucky we are that we can hop on the metro and so easily have such a great day!

The following week, my parents arrived and I took the two younger kids camping along with my parents. The 11 year old had basketball camp so stayed home. I have a whole separate post for that camping trip, but we had a good time and three nights doesn’t seem like enough time for camping anymore. Though I don’t know if I can fit more than three days’ worth of food in my cooler, so that’s a dilemma

The day after we got back from camping, I started my next show and my family came to visit. I didn’t get to spend as much time as I wanted with my family while they were here because I was working, but one fun thing we did was take a boat ride to Mount Vernon. My father has been reading a lot of books on the Revolutionary War lately and I thought it might be nice way to visit Washington’s estate by sailing up the Potomac. Much nicer than driving an hour either way, besides which we wouldn’t have been able to fit everyone in the two cars that we had. So we all got on the metro at 7am on a Sunday morning and rode all the way down to the wharf where we boarded a boat. I have to say my brother’s family and his in laws were such troopers about the 7 am departure, having gotten off a plane just the evening before.

The boat departed at 8:30am and after a gentle trip down the Potomac, we arrived at Mount Vernon around 10am. We disembarked at the pier and walked up to the mansion where we took a tour.

And I’m always fascinated by kitchens. This one was a separate building from the main mansion. Because of fire hazards and all that.

Also the outhouse. Because I find that fascinating too.

There are three toilet seats in there! Do three people use the facility at once? or is it to spread out the… ahem.. offerings?

I will say, I think going to Mount Vernon by boat didn’t quite leave enough time to fully explore Mount Vernon. We arrived at 10:00am and the return boat was at 1:15pm. Of course we had to eat lunch in there somewhere, so it really only left about 2 hours to explore. We did manage to walk most of the grounds in that time, and visit George and Martha’s grave, but we did not visit the Museum at all, or the farm, and we kind of sped through the gardens. I just wished we had time to stay and linger in the gardens and read every placard.

The rest of my brother’s visit was pretty low key. He and his in laws took off for Shenandoah for a couple days, and I went back to work while my parents stayed home with the kids. When my brother and co. got back they all went down to the Mall to see some museums, but I was working, so I didn’t go. But I think it’s great that there is so much to see in DC via Metro that I don’t have to accompany guests around all the time. I can hand them Metro cards and just say, “Have fun!” and they will be entertained.

We did go to a concert at Wolf Trap – it was actually the reason that my brother’s family came out in the first place. Joe Hisaishi, who composed music for the Studio Ghibli films, was conducting a concert of his film music. My brother and his family are huge Studio Ghibli fans. At first I was a little reluctant to go to the concert because it was late at night, and then it poured rain, and I was even more skeptical since it was an outdoor venue, albiet covered. But the weather cleared up in time for the concert and it was actually quite nice. I’ve worked at this venue, but I’ve never seen a concert there, and now I get why it’s such a big summer event – a warm summer breeze, and music, and fresh air… it just felt like summer in every way.

The last day my brother was here, we went to hot pot with. Hot pot is always fun and the place we went to now also has robot servers which will bring you your order, so that was fun and the kids got a real kick out of that. Originally we were going to get soup pots to share, but the kids all insisted that they get their own pot, so everyone got their own pot, including the 3 year old.

So that was the adventures so far in July. Now we’re back to the normal grind of things.

Fascinating readthis article about the mathematically correct way to tie your shoes. I never gave a thought to which was the proper way to tie my shoes – tie, one loop, wind around, pull through, tighten loops. But apparently, in each step, bringing the lace over or under makes a huge difference between a knot that tightens as it moves and one that loosens. Maybe it was because it was 2am and I was still awake, but I found this article so interesting and immediately grabbed my shoes and started making bows. (Revenge bedtime procrastination at it’s finest!) This also explains why using the bunny rabbit ears method of tying laces has never worked for me – it’s the wrong combination of over/under. Also – the six year old doesn’t know how to tie his shoes yet – well, he doesn’t have lace up shoes right now, so it’s kind of a low priority task – but I’m pretty sure the 11 year old was tying her laces at this age, though I didn’t teach her. I think she learned through a combination of friends and observation. Anyone have a tried and true method for teaching shoe tying?

Grateful For:
1) The kind person who found my phone and turned it in. I had gone with the six year old to meet up with a friend and her son at an outdoor puppet show. After the show, the kids played on the playground nearby while my friend and I caught up. The are moving across the country soon and I’m a little sad – she is someone whom I befriended randomly at an event at a park. One of those, “Hey you’re cool, let’s exchange numbers and hang out!” strangers who become friends. Anyhow, then it started to rain, and we made plans to rendez vous at the ice rink and have lunch at the snack bar there. Well, I got in my car and realized I couldn’t find my phone. (Side note – I thought it notable that not being able to find my phone meant that I had resisted looking at it for 2.5 hours. Part of me thought, “Wow… see, you can go a couple hours without your phone! Try to channel that more!”) But anyhow, I went back to the picnic tables where we were sitting and also to where the puppet show was, but it was pouring rain by then, so I gave up and just headed to the ice rink. Of course, I got in the car and realized that I couldn’t use the phone to navigate me to the ice rink.
Luckily I had a vague idea where we were, yet even still I did have to pull a couple U turns and at one point found myself driving up the drive to the county correctional facility, thinking it was just another residential road. It was not. I did eventually make it to the rink. We had lunch and chatted, and then I went back to the park to try to see if I could find my phone now that the rain had lightened up. Still no. So then I gave up and went home, thinking of all the things that I needed my phone for and low level panicking because we were about to leave to go camping and I didn’t want to leave without a phone.
Anyhow, I got home, all discouraged, and there was, curiously, a note tucked in my storm door. It was from a police officer, saying that my phone was with the Rockville Police. Relief poured euphorically over me and I felt like the luckiest person in the world. (I did wonder how they were able to track me down, but they are the police so I imagine it is in their best interest to be able to figure these things out.)
Anyhow, I called the police station and they said if I could get there before the shift change they could hand me my phone – something about after shift change the phone has to get catalogued and put into a lost and found and it’s more steps to get it. So the six year old and I zipped up there and got the phone – which they handed over without my even having to show any ID, surprisingly. And to celebrate, we got some boba tea (from a new to me tea shop. It was a little sweet for my taste, but the owner was very kind.). And then capped the day off with Taiwanese food. Man, to go from desperation over my lost phone to joy at having it back all in one day was exhausting.

2) Grateful for being hired for a gig and for the crew at the theatre for making sure everything went smoothly. I got a call to stage manage a small concert event for the Embassy of Peru and since I like working for pay, I decided to do it. I don’t do a lot of one off event type gigs – I like the comfort of rehearsing a piece and helping it develop and knowing it very well before we get in front of an audience. These gigs where I come in and a show magically just happens often involve a lot of uncertainty and quick decision making, and let’s just say it’s not my comfort zone. One the one hand, one day gigs are very high pressure because you only have one shot at it. On the other hand, they are kind of low pressure because you only have to do it once. How’s that’s for irony. On top of that, the person who hired me mentioned that the producer did not speak a lot of English. I speak no Spanish. I wasn’t really sure how it would all pan out. But luckily it was at a theatre that I had worked in many times with a crew that was helpful and who I knew had my back. And once I got to the theatre, I learned that the group actually spoke enough English to communicate what track should be played for which dance number, and when a microphone was needed, and which side of stage people were coming from, when something had to be moved in order for there to be space for the dancers. And another performer taught me how to say “Thirty minutes” and “Fifteen minutes” and “Ten minutes” in Spanish. So all in all, things went quite well and everyone was happy and I got to hear some amazing singing.

3)Peaches. It’s stone fruit season, one of my favorite fruit seasons. Is there anything more lovely than a ripe juicy peach – sweet, syrupy and fragrant?

Looking Forward To:
– Having the last half of August off. Like I mentioned above, I haven’t had a whole lot of time off this summer and I want to have day trips and pool days and ice cream trips. I just read about this Icelandic tradition of meandering to find ice cream and meandering back. Sounds lovely.

– Getting my show paperwork done early. I’m trying to be less last minute in getting my show running paperwork done. I used to wait until we’ve staged the whole show in the rehearsal room then just sit down and plug through the running cues for everything in one or two long sessions at the computer, but this time I’m trying to plug in the information into the runsheets as we stage each scene. We have a pretty short tech process for this next show, so I knew I wanted to get ahead of the usual paperwork deadline. It’s probably a more efficient way to do paperwork; I think I usually wait in case there are changes made, but I’m learning it’s easier to get the first draft of a document done then go back and make changes then it is to wait until I have all the information before starting the runsheet – there will always be changes so no point in waiting until there are none.

– Agatha Christie radio plays. I’ve discovered on Libby, a whole series of radio adaptations of Christie’s mystery novels. They are usually only and hour or two long, so perfect for my commute – long enough to really engage me, but short enough that I can get through one in a few days. It makes me almost look forward to my commute. I also have a bunch of CDs that I bought in college that I have never listened to, and since my car has a CD player, I think I might take time to work my way through some new to me works. Last week, I listened to the 2005 musical The Light in the Piazza, which I found touching though not very hummable. I think perhaps it’s better onstage than on CD.

Saturday: Pizza and Star Wars. (I’m pretty sure I was working this night)

Sunday: Chinatown Express -our favorite noodle place in Chinatown

Monday: Salt and Pepper Eggplant and Tomato/Egg Scramble. From Hetty McKinnon’s book To Asia with Love. The sauteed tomato with eggs is a traditional Taiwanese dish – I made it with canned tomatoes since I didn’t have fresh, and it was really tasty. Good pantry recipe. The Salt and Pepper eggplant was tasty, but the eggplant took too much of the oil and was a little soggy. I need to trouble shoot that for next time because I thought the dish was good enough to try again.

TuesdayThurday: Camping.

Friday – Pizza (The Husband made) and The Black Stallion. My mother chose this 1979 movie for movie night – I guess she had seen it when it first came out and the six year old reminded her of the boy in the movie. I enjoyed it, though I thought it ended rather abruptly and I do wish they hadn’t tried to race the horse, plotwise.

Saturday: Tortellini with red sauce, garlic bread, roasted zucchini, salad, turkey meatballs. This was the day that my brother and his in-laws arrived. I always feel like it’s nice to have a home cooked meal after getting off a plane, so offered to cook. Even though I was feeding twelve people, this was a pretty easy meal to throw together.

Sunday: We went out to eat with everyone. Sort of to celebrate my parents’ 50th Wedding anniversary. I had mussels and oysters.

Monday: The Husband made kung pao tofu.

Tuesday: The Husband made stir fried garlic eggplant.

Wednesday: I have scribbled down Yogurt/ wings. This can’t possibly be what we had for dinner…. Maybe it’s what I ate while at work?

Thursday: My brother and his family/ in laws came over for dinner again. I basically looked in the freezer and fridge and pulled everything grillable out and picked up some vegetables from the farm stand to supplement. We had: Grilled salmon, grilled tofu and tomatoes (from the Green Barbeque cookbook), grilled pesto gnocchi (also from the Green Barbeque – while I thought this was tasty and clever to grill the gnocchi, I think roasting gnocchi on a sheetpan gets much the same result and is less fussy. One of those, “Glad I tried it, but don’t need to do it again” recipes.), Black Bean Cucumber Cabbage Rice Noodle Salad (from Hetty McKinnon’s To Asia with Love. Love this recipe), also grilled zucchini and corn.

Friday: Dinner at a brewpub near Wolf Trap before our concert. I had mussels. I seem to like having mussels when I go out to eat. Maybe I should investigate making it at home?

Saturday: Hot Pot.

Sunday: Sushi take out.

Weekly recap + what we ate: Spring Break

Contemplating the Hirshhorn Museum.

My brother’s family was in town the last week of March for their Spring break. It had been almost two and a half years since we saw them in person- last time they were here, the baby was eight weeks old. Of course there have been many video calls since them, but seeing them in person was pretty great.

I feel so lucky that we live somewhere where there is a wealth of things to see and do, and most of it is free. One thing my brother and sister-in-law really wanted to see was the new Yayoi Kasuma exhibit at the Hirshhorn, the contemporary and modern art museum on the Mall. I had missed the last Kasuma exhibit when it was here, so I was eager to go this time, even though it meant lining up at 9:00am for tickets on a Sunday. Fortunately, my brother and his In-laws went down on the early side to get in line and my sister-in-law, my mom, and I followed with the kids at a more reasonable hour.

I will admit the only work of Kasuma I had been familiar with were pictures of her pumpkins. The current exhibit featured two of her Infinity Mirror Rooms, but first up was a pumpkin:

I was unprepared for how the pumpkin took up so much space and how looming it would feel in its dotted room. I also love how the precision of the dots contrast with the more organic curves of the pumpkin.

The Infinity Mirror Rooms were another kind of overwhelming and immersive experience. These are rooms where the walls are made of mirrors so they seem to extend without limits. There was a time limit on how long each museum patron could be in the room – 30 seconds for the first room and 60 for the second. I think there is something ironically claustrophobic about being in a room that seems to stretch for infinity. The first room featured all these stuffed protuberances that came out of the ground like a field of polka dotted cacti. It was kind of whimsical and fun.

The second room featured polka dot lanterns aglow in a dark mirrored room. This room reminded me a little of being out on Hallowe’en, and how disembodied one can feel in the dark, even when surrounded by lighted objects. (I’m sure there’s some kind of metaphor for life in that somewhere…)

After we went through the Kasuma exhibit, we also went to see the Laurie Anderson exhibit. The exhibit was a fascinating blend of sound, film, and visual images. There was one piece that featured projections of people sharpening knives, the sound almost symphonic. There was also several rooms with words and pithy thoughts scrawled, graffiti like, all over the walls and floors. Here were a few of my favorites:

I find the Hirshhorn rather overwhelming to visit, to be honest. In think contemporary art requires a lot of mental bandwidth from me, and a lot of it, while interesting, demands attention unrelentingly. At the Hirshhorn, a lot of the exhibits often have audio as well visual components and sometimes I don’t feel like I have room to process everything. And a lot of the time, I had to admit that I just don’t “get” what I’m seeing, even though I read the little placard next to the work. Sometimes I feel like I’m either overthinking contemporary art, or under thinking it. And honestly sometimes it just makes me giggle. I’m glad I live near and can visit in short bursts and take things in one exhibit at a time.

At the time of my brother’s visit, most of the museums were still open on reduced hours, so we spent one day walking around and visiting monuments since we couldn’t go to any museums. We saw the MLK memorial and the FDR memorial, those being two of the closest to the cherry blossom in the tidal basin. Of course it wasn’t officially peak bloom anymore, but there was still lots of blossoms to be seen. And lots of petals to rain down on our heads like snow.

Among all that, I had one last supertitle gig for this season, and perhaps my favorite of all the vocal recitals I worked this year. The pianist for the recital was also a composer and the second half of the program was entirely songs cycles that he had written. He introduced each song set and there was something wonderfully personal about a hearing a composer talk about the backstory of their own work.

Another fascinating thing that happened that week – I took my mom to the Mall to find an outfit for a meeting she had coming up. As we were walking to Macy’s, we saw a good wandering around the parking lot.

“Strange!” I thought. But I’d seen a lot of geese flying overhead recently so I didn’t really think much of it, though I have to admit that seeing a goose wandering in the Macy’s parking lot has a certain charm, so long as one stays out of the goose’s way. Then, as I was walking up to the door, I saw:

Why yes, that is a goose and two eggs in the planter in front of Macy’s. In my head I have a story (much like when my middle child was born) of a goose couple starting to fly off on a journey when suddenly the mama goose says, “We need to pull over now! The eggs are coming!” And she lays two eggs in the middle of a parking lot. (I, fortunately did make it to the hospital with my middle child…). Anyway, given that there were clearly two geese guarding the precious eggs, we figured it was better if we just went our merry way into Macy’s and let the geese have some family privacy. Or as much as one can have in the middle of a parking lot.

What we ate: we actually ate out more than usual because cooking dinner for twelve people seemed overwhelming.

Saturday: take out thai, picked up on our way home from the airport.

Sunday: We had dinner at a new to us restaurant with lots of outdoor seating and firepits. Though the evening was on the chilly side, the restaurant staff brought us blankets and lots of extra firewood for the firepit. Of course half our blankets were immediately commandeered by the kids to build blanket forts…. The food was pretty good and they had these fun smores kits for dessert. The fun thing about their s’mores is that in addition to the typical Hersheys chocolates they also had York Peppermint Patties and thin Reese Peanut Butter Cups. Such a brilliant idea!

Monday: ordered Vietnamese food. We needed something quick because we were having family photos taken.

Tuesday: Terriyaki Tofu and grilled Korean Beef and grilled veggies. With rice and seaweed salad on the side.

Wednesday: I had to work so I got a take out grain bowl from Beefsteak.

Thursday: Japanese take out.

Friday: Pizza and movie night at our Tennessee AirBnB (more on that next post…). Pizza Hut, which was better than I had remembered, though they were out of mushrooms, which I have never encountered before.
